Web Application Review - Tesla

Tesla is a technology company pioneering renewable energy platforms. Tesla cars and solar is leading the world in renewable energy. Hitting the Tesla homepage, you are presented with a clean look with a navigation bar at the top for all the different model cars and solar options. Tesla interacted with customers via touchless ordering and delivery. Vehicles and solar can all be customized from the website.

Looking at Tesla cars, you can select sedans and crossovers with base options with pricing expectations on the same page. You can customize the drivetrain, paint, wheels, cabin color, and advanced driving technology if the visitors want to customize. You are presented a total price and price after incentives through fuel and tax credits at the end of the customizations. Options to finance or lease are available with pricing assumptions through Tesla credit. Here is a picture of the landing page for the Tesla cars.

Once you click on a car, the application goes to the web for Tesla.com to begin customizing your Tesla. Please see the following picture for details.

As you go through the customization sections, Tesla keeps you on the same page, just going down the page. You have never navigated away from the page, which keeps the visitor engaged versus waiting for the next page to load. The page is laid out in a minimalist way with clean lines and is visually attractive to visitors. I like the approach that the web designer implored as many websites have too much information, which overwhelms the potential customer. Tesla makes you want to stay on the page and review due to its ease of use.

Tesla did an excellent job with folks that have accounts with them. If you are a customer of Tesla and own a car or solar panels, you can manage everything in one place. Being a customer of Tesla and working through the installation of solar panels, I can get updates as my project progresses in one place. I can make changes or ask questions using their electronic form, a free text field. Tesla is very responsive and provides feedback within 24 hours via a phone call to the customer.

As much as I appreciate the look and feel of the Tesla platforms, some things need to be improved. There is no way that a customer could contact a call center to speak to a live person, for starters. Understanding that they are a tech company, live customer support via the phone is essential for folks that do not want to use live chat. Here is a picture of the live chat form.

I believe another opportunity for Tesla is to create an area for people to understand renewable technology and gain insights to decide whether going with Tesla is smart. Being a customer, I had to do extensive research using other sources to understand renewable technology.  Many factors play into solar from offsets to net metering, which is foreign to most people. It would be nice to have this information on the Tesla application and site.

Tesla is leading the way in renewable energy and will continue to innovate its product and web presence.

Best,

Miguel
